Cost strategy

Excelsior University admission cost-saving levers

Most of the money you can save at Excelsior is saved before you register for a single course. The levers stack, and the ones that pay the most are the ones people reach for last.

The short answer

The largest savings at Excelsior come from arriving with credit rather than buying it: transfer your prior college coursework, convert military and job training evaluated by ACE, add credit for prior learning, and clear general education by examination through CLEP, DSST, or AP where your background allows. On top of the credit levers sit the price levers: the Sophia partnership discount of up to 10 percent for two or more courses, military tuition benefits and fee considerations, employer tuition assistance and partner discounts, and federal and state aid claimed through the FAFSA. The move that matters most is sequence, front-load the free credit evaluation before you are admitted, because since February 15, 2023 a post-admission credit evaluation fee applies to credit assessed after acceptance.

The credit levers, largest first

Every credit you bring in is a course you do not pay per-credit tuition to take, so credit is the biggest saving on the board. Transfer credit is the workhorse: Excelsior reviews coursework from accredited institutions, and its most transfer-friendly programs recognize a very large share of a degree from prior study. Military service members can convert training documented on the Joint Services Transcript and evaluated by ACE, along with Air University and Defense Language Institute coursework. Credit for prior learning turns documented professional experience into credit where it maps to a requirement. And credit by examination clears general-education requirements for a fraction of a course, through CLEP, DSST, AP, and a set of information-technology certification exams the university recognizes.

The price levers on top of the credit

Once the credit is maximized, the remaining courses can still cost less. The Excelsior and Sophia partnership offers up to a 10 percent tuition discount when you complete two or more Sophia courses for credit, which is a discount and a credit source at once. Military students should ask specifically about tuition rates and fee treatment for service members and families. And employer tuition assistance is more common and more generous than most adult students assume, so confirm what your employer reimburses and whether your organization sits inside one of Excelsior's educational partnerships, which can carry their own discounts.

Aid and benefits, claimed in full

SourceWhat it doesHow to claim it
FAFSA-based aidFederal Pell and state grants, plus loans if neededFile the current-year FAFSA, then talk to an advisor
Academic scholarshipsMerit awards, often GPA-linkedAsk admissions which you qualify for and when to apply
Military benefitsTuition assistance and service-member ratesWork with the military advising team
Employer assistanceReimbursement and partner discountsConfirm your employer's policy and partnership status

Aid stacks: students routinely combine a grant, an employer benefit, and a scholarship against the same bill. The specific dollar figures and deadlines change every cycle, so treat the amounts as a conversation with an advisor rather than a fixed number, and claim early, since some awards are limited and time-sensitive.

The order that saves the most

  • Request the free credit evaluation before admission, so nothing is assessed under the post-admission fee
  • Push transfer, military, and prior-learning credit as far as your program's residency requirement allows
  • Fill the requirements still open with exam credit and Sophia courses, aiming each at a named slot
  • Layer the price levers: Sophia discount, employer assistance, military rates
  • File the FAFSA and ask about scholarships early, then re-check every trimester

Where tutoring support fits

Saving money on the front end only holds if the courses you do pay for actually clear the first time, because a failed course repurchases its credits at full price and undoes a term of careful planning. That is the part we protect. Send your target program and a transcript picture, and we help read the evaluation, aim each credit lever at an open requirement, and tutor the courses that remain to a first-attempt grade above your program's floor. Where a requirement can be cleared by examination instead of tuition, the free fork consult on the acceleration page runs that math with you.
